From Hip Hop, Ballet and Acrobatics...to Jazz, Tap and Theatre Performance. Donnas Dance Studio provides the widest choice of performing arts classes and activities in Cork. Our children’s classes have two distinct programmes Recreational and Accelerated.

Recreational Classes

Recreational classes are for children who wish to take dance as, drama or singing once or twice per week as a hobby. This is where the vast majority of the children in our studio begin. Classes are grouped according to age and experience and are suitable for all children and teenagers. You can choose from a wide selection that includes:

Accelerated Classes

Accelerated classes are for those who wish to take their involvement to a higher level. Children in this group will take a greater number of classes each week and be highly committed to their activities at the studio. In additional to the recreational classes, these children will take specialist classes in SLT (stretch leaps and turns technique) as well as specially focused performance classes including Corp de Ballet technique and Performance team classes. Entry to all of these classes is by selection only and there is a minimum number of classes per week required to be considered for selection. Children in this group will be placed in classes based on ability not age. Class styles in the recreational programme include:

Classical Ballet

Technical ballet skills for new dancers

Age group: 5 yrs+

Programme: Recreational and Accelerated

Duration: 60 minutes (90 minutes advanced)

What this class covers: Classical ballet is an excellent foundation for all forms of dance, providing the technical training and body-awareness that all dancers will need. Beginners’ classes are 60 minutes each and cover barre work, centre floor and progressions.

Angelina Ballerina

The perfect start for the budding ballerina

Age Group: 2 years 10 months to 6 yrs

Programme: Recreational

Duration: 30 minutes

What this class covers: Join the weekly adventures of the famous mouseling Angelina Ballerina in her search to become a prima ballerina.

Modern Theatre

An intermediate class blending jazz, musical theatre and commercial dance styles.

Age group: 6 yrs+

Programme: Recreational and Accelerated

Duration: 60 minutes (90 minutes advanced)

What this class covers: Just like modern theatre, modern dance is an eclectic combination of cultural and historical trends and styles. This class is an upbeat exploration of modern dance, covering skills including stretching, technique and choreography. Drawing on techniques from classical ballet, theatrical and lyrical traditions, classes are set to popular music.

Tap Dance

Theatrical tap dance for intermediate students

Age group: 8 yrs+

Programme: Recreational and Accelerated

Duration: 60 minutes

What this class covers: Tap is a dance form that originated in America – it’s great for rhythm and coordination, it’s fast, fun and stylish. These classes are a big hit, so sign up fast!

Theatre Tots

A combination class for younger beginners

Age Group: 4-6 yrs

Programme: Recreational

Duration: 45 minutes

What this class covers: These introductory level classes are designed to accommodate a younger child’s attention span, while providing them with exposure to multiple dance forms including modern dance, acrobatics and action song styles.

Singing for Musical Theatre

All the skills you need to become a Broadway star (almost)

Age group: 6 yrs+

Programme: Recreational

Duration: 60 minutes

What this class covers: This class covers a wide range of skills required for theatre performers. The key focus is voice and singing techniques, but it also incorporates elements of dance, acting, microphone and recording techniques.

Speech and Drama

Developing your imagination, your confidence and your speaking skills

Age group: 5 yrs+

Programme: Recreational and Accelerated

Duration: 60 minutes

What this class covers: Performance depends on confidence as much as technique – and this class is designed to develop both. Improvisation sparks the imagination and scene work builds voice confidence. Students attend this class to develop their skills in acting, communicating and performing.

Stretch, Leaps and Turns (SLT)

Advanced dance techniques to improve balance and flexibility

Age group: 5 yrs+

Programme: Accelerated – by audition only.

Duration: 60 minutes (90 minutes advanced)

What this class covers: This is an advanced level technique class designed to develop skills in stretch, leaps and turns, movements which are required in all dance forms. This varied programme of classes covers a huge range of skills including strength, stretch, balance and partnering work (stunting).

Acrobatics

Developing the tricks that complete your dance skills

Age group: 5 yrs +

Programme: Recreational

Duration: 60 minutes

What this class covers: The high flying tricks that all good dancers need to complete their repertoire are what this class focuses on. Tumbling skills include backbends, cartwheels, handstands, rolls, walkovers, handsprings, aerial tricks and more. Human pyramid and lifting skills also feature strongly in the class.
